Solomon Islands

The National Building Code for Solomon Islands (NBCSI) was reviewed and updated in 2021 and is currently available on the Solomon Islands Government Ministry of Infrastructure and Development web site as a draft.

A National Building Code Bill 2022 has been drafted and is soon to be enacted. Once enacted, the draft NBCSI 2021 will be issued as a final 2022 version,

The basic objective of the NBCSI is to ensure that acceptable standards of structural sufficiency, fire safety, health, and amenity, are maintained for the benefit of Solomon Islands now and in the future. The requirements included in the NBCSI are intended to extend no further than is necessary in the public interest, to be cost effective, not needlessly onerous in their application, and easily understood.

The NBCSI was originally published in 1990 with a companion Home Building Manual Solomon Islands (HBMSI). The HBMSI is currently being updated as the Solomon Islands Building Manual (SIBM) and is due to be published at the end of 2022. The SIBM is intended for the use of para-professionals and professionals in the building industry for the speedy design of simple buildings which conform to the structural and water and sanitation requirements of the NBCSI.  Approval authorities may use the SIBM for the confirmation of the adequacy of the structural details given in the proposals submitted to them.
