Kiribati

The basic objective of the National Building Code of Kiribati (NBCK) is to ensure that acceptable standards of structural sufficiency, fire safety, health, and amenity, are maintained for the benefit of Kiribati now and in the future. The requirements included in the NBCK are intended to extend no further than is necessary in the public interest, to be cost effective, not needlessly onerous in their application, and easily understood.

The NBCK is governed under the Kiribati Building Act 2006.

The NBCK was originally published in 1990. It was updated in 2010 and the new final draft completed in 2012. The NBCK and associated legislation is currently being reviewed and updated under the “PRIF Improvements to National Building Codes and Standards in the Pacific Technical Assistance”. The updated NBCK should be available mid-2023.
