Kiribati Water and Sanitation Workshop

On 28 and 29 November 2011 a Stakeholders Consultation Workshop was held in South Tarawa, Kiribati to discuss South Tarawa's Water Supply, Sanitation and Solid Waste management program.

The Consultation was organised by the Government Task Force on Water and Sanitation and led by both the Ministry of Public Works and Utilities and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Decelopment, with support from PIAC. A number of representatives from government ministires, non-government organisations, religious groups and the private sector attended the workshop as well as representatives from the development partners and sector specialists.

The workshop focused on the key issues of water resource management, water supply, sanitation (waste water) and solid waste management; as well as community-related, instituationl, legal, organisational, financial and environment issues and more specifically addressed the following matters: 

  • A roadmap and investment plan for the Tarawa Sanitation Sector Improvement Project,
  • Capacity and community involvement issues relating to the implementation of various projects,
  • The South Tarawa Water and Sanitation Action Plan.
